The fresh cherry and plums are abundant with the tobacco and vanilla bean adding complexity. Aged 14 months in 2 –3 years old French oak barrique which adds some smokey vanilla bean and the quality of the fruit that holds this wine together.
All fruit is estate grown.
2014 was a warm and dry year for Margaret River. Almost perfect warm days and cooler nights typified what we expect. Then Autumn bought cooler days and nights which lengthened our vintage and just allowed the reds to ripen that little bit more.
This was perfect for the Cabernet and the Petit Verdot. Later picks with favourable weather conditions round out tannins and add fruit weight.
53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Malbec, 13% Merlot, 11% Petit Verdot
Cabernet Sauvignon – this is the same make as our Bartondale.
The A+ barrels make the St Johns and Bartondale allocation. Generally the more fruit driven barrels are selected for the St Johns. The 2014 got 80% new oak a first for this wine. The Cabernet spends 40 days on skins, then 14 months in French oak barriques.
Malbec – Made to highlight dark colour and a rich mid palate. Spends 7-10 days on skins then goes into 2-4 year old French oak barriques for 14 months.
Barrel selected for the blend. Adds weight richness and intensity.
Merlot – 5-8 days on skins ensures red fruits and soft tannins. Spends 14 months in 2-3 year old french oak barriques.
Petit Verdot – The 2014 was a year the PV ripened before the rains came. Probably the best year for this varietal. An intense lifted aromatic component of the blend with fine tannins. In the winery the 4 varietals all preformed well during ferment and careful oak selection meant the assemblage
Deep Ruby Red – Densely Packed
An elegant and complex wine. Aromas shift through the red fruits, black cherry spectrum. A touch of violets, kalamata olives and freshly ground coffee sit nicely with the subtle smokey french oak notes.
The Churchview St Johns Limited Release is truly an elegant wine.
A complete palate – fruit fills the mid palate and the fine tannins carry this fruit seamlessly adding a wonderful line and the soft acid adds succulance. Each mouthful reveals a new element – is it black cherry or a fresh red plum, or fruits of the forest wrapped in an ethreal blanket of cocoa and cedar? It just keeps on giving, this is one of our best yet!
